Why won't my dental handpiece hold a bur? Chuck problems explained

Short answer: if a bur slips, wobbles or won't release, the chuck is usually worn, contaminated with debris or damaged by non-standard burs. Chuck replacement is a routine part of a handpiece overhaul.

Quick checks

Try a new, standard-length bur. Make sure the push button isn't pressed while running (it causes heat and wear). If it still slips, stop using the handpiece — a bur ejecting chairside is a safety risk.
