Why is my dental handpiece making a strange noise?

A healthy high-speed has a smooth, steady whine. When the sound changes, the handpiece is telling you something is wearing out. Catching it early usually means a cheaper repair.

Grinding or growling

This is the classic sign of worn bearings. Keep using it and the bearings can break apart and damage the impeller, turning a $99 rebuild into a $179 overhaul.

Rattling or vibration

Rattling often means a loose or unbalanced turbine, or a bur that isn't seated correctly. Try a new bur first. If the rattle stays, the turbine needs service.

Louder or higher-pitched than usual

A sharper whine can mean the turbine is spinning too fast because of high air pressure, or that the bearings are running dry. Check pressure and lubrication.

Intermittent sound or stopping

A turbine that cuts in and out usually has a failing bearing that's catching. Stop using it before it seizes.
