Why is my dental handpiece getting hot?

A handpiece head that feels hot to the touch can burn a patient's lip or cheek. If it's hot, stop using it and set it aside. Here's what usually causes it.

1. Failing bearings

Bearings that are worn, dry, or contaminated create friction, and friction creates heat. This is the most common cause and is fixed with a turbine rebuild.

2. Too little or too much lubricant

Skipping lubrication dries the bearings. Over-lubricating traps debris that builds up during sterilization. Follow the manufacturer's instructions, and run the handpiece for a few seconds after oiling to clear the excess.

3. Worn chuck (push-button heat)

On push-button handpieces, a worn chuck can rub against the back cap and heat up. This is often felt on the button itself. A new chuck is part of a full overhaul.

4. Blocked water spray

If the coolant spray is weak or missing, the bur and tooth heat up quickly. Check for clogged water ports and the unit's water supply.
