High-speed vs. slow-speed dental handpieces: what's the difference?
High-speed handpieces cut tooth structure at very high RPM; slow-speed handpieces offer torque for polishing, finishing and lab work.
Short answer: high-speed handpieces run at up to around 400,000 RPM for cutting enamel and removing restorations, while slow-speed handpieces run far slower with higher torque for polishing, caries removal, prophy and finishing.
How they're repaired differently
High-speeds use an air turbine with small bearings that wear with use. Slow-speeds use an air motor with attachments (straight nose cones and contra-angles) whose gears and bearings wear. Both are serviced by replacing worn parts rather than the entire instrument.
