How to lubricate a dental handpiece (step by step)

Proper lubrication is the single biggest factor in handpiece lifespan. A simple step-by-step routine for dental assistants.

Short answer: clean the handpiece, apply the manufacturer-recommended lubricant into the drive-air tube, run it briefly to expel excess oil, wipe the exterior, then sterilize. Always follow your handpiece manufacturer's instructions.

Step by step

1. Wipe off debris and flush water lines. 2. Remove the bur. 3. Apply lubricant into the correct (drive air) port. 4. Run the handpiece with a bur inserted for several seconds until the spray runs clean. 5. Wipe away excess oil. 6. Bag and autoclave. 7. If recommended, run briefly after sterilization.

Common mistakes

Lubricating the wrong port, skipping the expel step (oil bakes into the head), and using the wrong lubricant for lube-free or electric attachments.
